Afternoon Schedule for Interviews

If you are interviewing on a Tuesday between October and March, this is probably for you. Nonetheless, you need to read the e-mail confirming your own interview to be sure. If you have been asked to re-interview, you might want to click here.

Check in with Ms. Hatcher in the office, Room 1-208, and she will direct you to where the orientation will be held, in Room 1-206.

by 11:30 Check in with Ms. Hatcher in Room 1-208.
11:30 - 12:30 Lunch with medical students.
12:45 - 1:55
An orientation session concerning the basic sciences, the clinical program, research, financial aid and various other topics begins the afternoon.
2:00 - 4:00 Two blind, one-on-one interviews are scheduled for this time. "Blind" means that while your interviewer will have your personal statement and biographical data, he or she will not have your grades, MCAT scores or letters of recommendation.
2:00 - 4:00 Besides the two scheduled interviews, you will have an open-book interview with either the Chairman of the Admissions Committee or the Dean of Admissions, who will review all aspects of your application. These last from a few minutes to as long as needed to clarify any issues. The purpose of this interview is to anticipate any questions that might arise during committee review.
4:00 - 5:00 Some of our students will take you on a tour of the medical school and hospital.

Directions to LSUHSC-S

Located at 1501 Kings Highway, just west of Exit 205 off Interstate-49, the LSU Health Sciences Center Medical Center is easily reached by car. Click here for a ho-hum map. For a cooler map, check out a high-altitude image.

For the more adventurous, download and install Google Earth by clicking here. Then on the
< Fly To > tab under Search, enter < 1501 kings highway, shreveport, la > and have some fun.
Yessss!

Where can I park?
Parking is normally easy at most of the public parking lots on Kings Highway next to Subway or directly in front of the main hospital entrance.

Can I fly?
Shreveport is served by Delta, American, Continental, and Northwest airlines. The medical school and airport are an easy 15-minute drive apart.

Directions to the Admissions Office

The simplest way to get to the Admissions Office, Room 1-208 in Building B, is park at one of the commercial lots on Kings Highway (Exit 205 on Interstate-49), find your way into one of the main buildings and ask for directions to the Chancellor's Office, which most people can give. Ask as often as necessary as you get closer. His office is one door down the hall, across from the Admissions Office in Room 1-208.

What is The Rule of 30's?
It is 30-times better to be 30 minutes early than 30 seconds late for your appointment.

Overnight Lodging in Shreveport

Except on the rarest occasions, overnight lodging in Shreveport is easy to find at numerous national chains that include among others (in no particular order) the Holidome, Sheraton, Marriot Courtyard, Best Western Chateau Suite Hotel (great bargain), Richmond Suites, Hampton Inn, LaQuinta, Clarion, Holoday Inn Express and Super 8. Sam's Town, Eldorado, Horseshoe and Boomtown hotel-and-casinos all offer good accommodations, as well. Especially easy to find at Exit 199, modest and five easy miles from the medical school down I-49, is the Comfort Inn. Choose a place other than these at your own discretion ... Trust me, some are a bit dicey.

Prices and services vary, and all have web sites with contact information for reservations.

Mentioning that you are on business with the LSU Medical School may get you a discount at some of these. The worst they can say is No.

The Comfort Inn, for one, requires that you present your "Invitation to Interview" in order to receive the LSU Med School dicount. BTW ... We keep getting good feedback from interviewess who stayed there. Tell them Thank You, and that you saw their establishment on this website.

Places to Eat in Shreveport

Applicants are sometimes not real hungry before the interview, but their travel partner(s) and/or parents usually can make up for it. Unless you prefer the usual chains, I suggest the following, all of which are about 5-10 minutes from the medical school. Evening reservations are always a good idea.

The best should be first ... Bistro 6301, just below, is my hands-down personal favorite for evening dining. Get a smile for telling them you read about them here. Dinner, only.

Bistro 6301 - First and only AAA Four-Diamond restaurant in North Louisiana, and Wine Spectator "Award of Excellence Winner". Vibrant new chef-owner André Grosz and chef Becky Bush (both internationally trained) consistently deliver creative fine dining experiences. Wide range of choices. Excellent wine list and
knowledgeable sommelier, Heather. 6301 Line Avenue. Reservation recommended. 865-6301. Dress, snappy casual.

Lunch

Earthereal Restaurant - Serves the bestest, healthiest food you will find anywhere. Open only for lunch, you will find their food satisfying and delicious, and the service friendly. Named the Best in Louisiana by Louisiana Magazine. 3309 Line Avenue (one block south of Kings Hwy, on the left)

Fertitta's - Worth finding at the bottom of the hill at 1124 Fairfield. Go as you are and enjoy a true mom-and-pop landmark. "Home of the Muffy," they just sold the millionth one in 2007. Good sandwiches, friendly, fine people. On the National Register of Historic Places. The owners' daughter is a medical student here. Take some olive mix home.

Julie Anne's Bakery - At Kings and Line avenues, offers good lunch fare and a wide range of homemade pastries. The owner's brother graduated from our school, and they like our students.
If you ever, ever find a chocolate eclair better than theirs, please bring one to Ms. Hatcher!

Lunch or Dinner

Monjuni's - Generous portions of good food at reasonable prices. Quite casual for lunch or dinner. Funky Italian décor, great staff. Hey! They have supported the medical students, and while payback is good, go for the food! Near Line and Louisiana at 1315 Louisiana. (no reservations)

Superior Bar and Grill - Not to be confused with the Steak House below. For lunch or dinner, good food, good margaritas, good service, and good prices. Casual to the max. A favorite of medical students (and many others) for eons. Top-shelf margaritas on the rocks, beyond compare. Thank manager Carlos Brown if you like it! His son is a former medical student and now a resident in Emergency Medicine here. 6123 Line Avenue. Dress, snappy casual. (No reservations for parties less than ten)

Chianti - Northern Italian cuisine. For lunch or dinner, a Shreveport favorite for years. Upscale dining. 6535 Line Avenue. Wine Spectator Award. 868-8866

L'Italiano - For lunch or dinner, good Italian fare in an intimate, neighborhood setting. If it's not on the menu, ask for it. In Bossier, at 701 Barksdale Blvd., near Horseshoe Casino. 747-7777

India's Restaurant - The best Indian food in Louisiana (after Masala, in Lafayette). The food has been excellent and patrons leave satisfied. Serving a wide variety of Indian dishes. Very casual.
3030 Youree Drive, just north of Kings on Youree. 868-7761

Dinner

The night before, or after it's over, relax and have a good dinner at these perennial favorites. All are within 10 minutes drive from the medical school and offer good food and drink.

Superior's Steak House - An upscale restaurant that resembles the famous Gibson's in Chicago. Excellent food, priced accordingly. 855 Pierremont, at Line and Pierremont. Reservation recommended. 219-4123

Bella Fresca - Fine, eclectic food at good prices. Don't let the exterior fool you. Good service. Good three-course, prix fixé dinners on Monday through Wednesday and excellent, friendly staff. 6307 Line Avenue. Wine Spectatoer Award. Reservation recommended. 865-6307

Ernest's Orleans - A Shreveport tradition for 50 years. New Orleans atmosphere. Good range of appetizers and entrées. Near downtown at 1601 Spring Street, at Spring and Youree. 226-1325

Should you have an unsatisfactory experience at any of these, please e-mail the part-time dining critic.
